06.09.07 - Back to Norway: Teaching in Trondheim |
|
As a follow-up of last year's 1:1 workshop «Camera Obscura» with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), designtoproduction coaches this autumn term a group of students during design and construction of a structure for the Botanical Garden Trondheim. The main purpose of both courses is the exploration of timber construction based on digital planning with the timber software Cadwork and digital prefabrication with a Hundegger SpeedCut automated joinery machine. According to both Cadwork and Hundegger, this approach of integrating timber software and machinery into architectural education is the first one of its kind. This year's structure in Ringve Botanical Garden will be designed and built by the participating students in collaboration with Kjeldstad Sagbruk in Selbu. The inauguration is scheduled for December 2007. Course organizer NTNU-Professor Knut Einar Larsen: "We wish to explore together with the students what we may gain in terms of new architectural possibilities in establishing a frictionless digital chain from concept development via detailing to production and final assembly of the parts at a building site."
