Appenzell Dulcimer

Herisau, 2006

A dulcimer is a hammer-struck, trapezoid-shaped zither. The Appenzell region in Switzerland has a long tradition of dulcimer construction. Dulcimer musician Fredi Zuberbühler proposed improving the instrument's sound and structure by curving its tops.

designtoproduction conceived a volumetric geometry that enabled the tops to be developed as single-curved elements and prepared the frame of the arched sounding board for CNC-production.
