The last façade element was installed on the Kilden Performing Arts Center in Kristiansand today.

The Kilden Performing Arts Center in Kristiansand is going to be the home of the Kristiansand symphony orchestra, Agder theatre and Opera South. Designed by Finnish architects ALA, it is currently under construction and expected to be open to the public in 2012.

The outstanding design feature of the building is the so-called “Wave Wall”, a 100m wide and 22m high overhanging and undulating timber façade that looms over the foyer areas and defines the building’s face towards the waterfront. The wall cantilevers up to 35m and is bisected by a vertical steel/glass façade into both interior and exterior parts.

designtoproduction was commissioned by the Norwegian timber contractor Trebyggeriet to carry out the detailed fabrication planning for the façade. Together with structural engineers SJB.Kempter.Fitze and timber fabricators Blumer-Lehmann – the same companies that had successfully cooperated on the Yeoju Golf Club by Shigeru Ban in 2008 – a construction concept was developed, dividing the whole façade into 126 elements that could be prefabricated to minimize on-site labor while guaranteeing a high level of precision.

designtoproduction’s work comprised a parametric 3d model of the complete façade as well as plan drawings for the 126 façade elements and fabrication data for all 14,000 unique timber pieces. To ease assembly and guarantee the intended continuous gap pattern along the façade, the exact positions of all oak cladding boards were defined by a total of 55,438 “seat cuts” and 123,166 pre-drilled screw holes incorporated in parametric model and fabrication data.

On December 14, 2010, the last façade element was put into place, rendering the wave wall complete. The smooth and trouble-free assembly process as well as the striking visual appearance of its result notably justify the additional effort put into developing a strong prefabrication concept utilizing computer-aided planning and fabrication technologies.
